Buddhist festival

There are number of Buddhist traditions, and Buddhists in different countries have their own festivals on different dates. These are the most important Buddhist festivals. Wesak, held on the full moon in May, is the important Buddhist festival and celebrates the birth if Buddha. Dharma day celebrates Buddha’s teaching and is held on the full moon of July. On dharma day there are readings from Buddhist scriptures, and people spend time reflecting on what they mean. Sangha day is held on the full moon in November and celebrates the spiritual Buddhist community. Buddhists traditionally give presents on this day. Parinirvana day, also called as Nirvana day, marks the death of Buddha. Celebrations vary from place to place, but generally Buddhists go to temples or monasteries on this day, or meditate.

From fixed cables to satellites

In the early years of telecommunications, the only way of linking one telephone with another was by fixed cables. Links between continents relied on cables under the sea. The invitation of the radio brought the first wireless communications, but because the surface of the earth is curved these signals could not travel far. Satellites changed everything. They sit at an exact height above the earth’s equator and they rotate at the same speed as the earth spins. This means that they stay in a fixed position. Telephone signals can be sent to the satellites and bounced back to earth. Everyone on the planet can be covered by only five or six satellites, except for the poles and surrounding areas, which are out of their range.
