Snooker

Snooker was first played by British army officers in India and later became popular in Britain, while pool began in America. One of pool’s top events is the Mosconi Cup, named after the great American pool player and 14 times world champion Willie Mosconi. It is now an annual contest in the UK and pitches the best pool players from Europe against those from the USA.

The greatest players of the modern game still playing are Steve Davis and Stephen Hendry. Between them they have won the Embassy World Professional Snooker title 13 times, and both have won all the other major trophies in the game. Davis won six world titles between 1981 and 1989. Scottish – born Hendry has won a record seven, including five consecutive titles between 1992 and 1996.
