Every college administrator has their own responsibilities to remember and keep in mind. If you can keep your mind set on these key points, your job will be much easier to manage.
1.Every student has a story and their own difficulties. Though there are many students that make up a student body, the reality is that every student is an individual. Though there may be many similarities between students, the reality is that they all have their own story. They all have their own difficulties, their own realities, and therefore bring their own baggage to their school experience. If you can think through this it will not only make your job easier, but it will allow you to help each student in the way that they deserve.
2.Every student really wants to learn and succeed, even if they don’t show that on the surface. Though some students seem to have a knack for getting in trouble or for causing drama, every one of them wants to learn. Even those who seem to fight the power of knowledge can truly benefit from a good education. If they are there in college then they want to learn, they want to succeed, and they want a future for themselves. It is your job as a college administrator to figure out the best ways to reach out to them and the ultimate ways to gain their attention and earn their respect.
3.Every student deserves attention and all the right tools. Even if a student is difficult or seems to have their own set of circumstances, they all deserve attention. Though the attention may come in different ways, they all need help along the way to succeed in college. They deserve the right tools for their educational experience and they all deserve to get the well rounded education that they are there for. This can be hard to keep in mind, particularly when dealing with difficult students, but it’s true. Every student deserves a chance at a proper education because that’s what it’s all about.
4.Every student comes from a different set of circumstances and walk of life. Though we tend to want to generalize as human beings, that can be dangerous as a college administrator. The truth is that every student comes from a totally different set of circumstances. Every student has their own family life, their own experiences, and comes from a totally different walk of life. College is great for teaching diversity, but blending in with others can be problematic. You as a college administrator need to remember this and ensure that you treat the students appropriately.
5.Every student may require a different approach, but should be treated fairly. No matter what the circumstances, how difficult the student, or what their set of circumstances may be, every student deserves a fair shot and should be treated fairly. Sounds like common sense, right? Well it can be hard to remember when you get caught up in the moment or the madness that a student may bring, so keep reminding yourself to stay sane and do a good job.
College administration can be a rewarding but difficult job. If you put your mind to it, you can really be successful as long as you remember these key points.
